Treasurer's Report 2010

by Enid Deutsch & Ellyn Samsky

The gross proceeds of the The Rory David Deutsch Foundation for the period September 30, 2009 through October 1, 2011 are over $1,100,000.00. This raised the total fundraising dollars since our inception to nearly $7,000,000.00.

Our family event “Rory’s Championship Under the Stars” held in November of 2010 generated close to $250,000.00. An evening with Jackson Browne raised $100,000.00. A heartfelt thanks goes to all those who participated in both events.

Once again, The Rory David Deutsch Foundation was the grateful recipient of several fundraising efforts from various supporters across the nation, the city, and the northern suburbs. Barry Bakal’s 100 holes of golf in one day raised almost $45,000. The Zeta Beta fraternities at the University of Illinois and at Indiana University have sponsored fundraisers at each of their respective schools raising $4,000.00 and $3,000.00 respectively. Runners from the 2008 Chicago Marathon added almost $5,000.00. The Paulina Cooper Dot-to-Dot race in Overland Park, Kansas has made The Rory David Deutsch Foundation the beneficiary of $50,000.00 since our last newsletter. “Rory Day” at JAB Produce continues to reap benefits by raising $19,000.00 also since our last newsletter. Andy Katz’s ESPN article, “The Strength of a Symbol”, reprinted in this newsletter resulted in contributions of $8,500.00. Robert Lubin participated in Jesse Itzler’s 100 Mile Man Foundation’s “City to the Sand Bicycle Race” from New York and earned $6,300.00 for our Foundation. Finally, Campus Colors in Highland Park raised close to $2,000.00.

General donations to The Foundation accounted for close to $100,000.00. These came from a host of individuals and organizations. Many readers of our previous newsletters, “Reaching Out”, responded generously to the coupon included. Others purchased our all-occasion donation cards that added the sum of $5,000.00. These can be purchased for $5.00 each. For a more generous donation, personal letters of Happy Day and Memorial letters can be sent for the appropriate occasion. These acknowledgements have generated another $6,000.00. The cards and letters can be purchased by calling The Foundation office at 1-818-919-RORY or by visiting our website at www.roryd.org.

We have donated 2 million dollars of a 3 million dollar pledge to Duke University, 1 million dollars to Children’s Memorial Hospital. In addition we have donated $400,000.00 of a $500,000.00 pledge in an effort to secure Dr. Oren Becher as The Rory David Deutsch Scholar at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University. As a result of the selfless efforts of all our volunteers and the continued generosity of our supporters, our executive committee had the ability to increase the endowment from $1,500,000.00 to $1,750,000.00. Together each of these milestones guarantees that The Foundation will go on in perpetuity and make our dream that much closer to a reality—a cure for the devastating disease that took our beloved Rory much too soon.
